FIGHTING BACK AGAINST TYRANTS
Just say no to tyranny and confusion
On the “State of Freedom” podcast, episode 30, I learned from an interview with Representative Kathy Edmonston that in this latest session of the Louisiana legislature, there was an effort by House leadership to confuse the members by introducing many amendments to pending legislation in the final moments before voting. This deprived the members of an opportunity to review billions of dollars of taxpayer spending before voting on it.
The rules require 48 hours for the members to study the issues, but the “leadership” caused this chaos to occur by presenting the House members with hundreds of amendments with less than 30 minutes remaining in the session.
This tactic confused many of our legislators and complicated their consideration of important legislation at the moment of action, and I believe the purpose was to dishonestly affect the results of the votes.
I’d like to suggest that this tactic will be employed again and that other tactics may also be invented or discovered to pervert good legislation and advance bad legislation.
I see no better way to respond than to determine that the answer to any suggestion which was not proposed 48 hours in advance of voting is an automatic “no.”
It is important to remember that these sinister tactics are not developed by stupid people, and if their intended results are thwarted by automatic “no votes,” they will likely try to devise a way to make them serve as “yes votes.”
But, for the present time, I believe that automatic “no” votes whenever the 48-hour rule is violated will help to return transparency and honesty to the legislative process.
Both House and Senate leadership should be held accountable for this at the ballot box.
God bless you, Dave
