Here in Louisiana, we are blessed with many constitutionalist Christian neighbors. We have a tendency to expect our representatives in the legislature to think logically, with the needs and concerns of our communities in mind, especially the needs of our children.
I think that we may need to keep many of our Senators and representatives on a shorter leash.
HB 648 would have prohibited transgender procedures and treatments on minors. The next step was a hearing by the Senate Health & Welfare Committee, on its way to a Senate floor vote.
It suffered defeat at the hands of the committee Chairman, Fred Mills of New Iberia. Mills was the deciding vote in a four, four-tie.
The Hayride published an article on the matter where they said, “Since he turned on his constituents and voted to kill the overwhelmingly-popular bill that would ban pediatric sex change surgeries and the chemical castration of children, Fred Mills is now the state’s media darling.”
When asked about his concern for the backlash he said, “Why should I?”
Mills said in an interview after he broke a tie vote Wednesday in the Louisiana Senate Health and Welfare Committee. “They don’t live in District 22. They don’t have a 337 area code.”
“I didn’t run for office to serve those people,” added Mills, a GOP member and pharmacist who represents portions of four rural parishes and New Iberia.”
As a Pharmacist, Mr. Mills may have had a personal, and financial reason for killing this bill before it could reach the Senate floor, where it likely would have been approved and sent to the Governor for ratification into law.
As a pharmacist, and due to the life-long need for pharmaceutical treatments of transgender patients, is there any doubt that his fundamental interest in defeating this bill was professional? Does anyone believe that the citizens of SD 22 have an affirmative view of the pharmaceuticals and procedures addressed in HB 648?
I hope that Mr. Mills will enjoy his new-found fame. I for one, will do my best to make him a household name in Louisiana, and I’m sure I am not alone.
I invite everyone in America to let Mr. Mills know how you feel about his actions, especially those of SD 22 of Louisiana.
God bless you, Dave
