GOOD MEN DOING NOTHING
Do we take our civic duties seriously?
On my way home from work today, I stopped at a local farm stand for some veggies. I often stop at this particular stand because of their excellent tomatoes, and the same gentleman, and often why I guess is his wife, attend it.
The man said something about Clintons and Trump. I didn’t hear him clearly, but his reference to Trump appeared positive. I engaged him, wondering whether he preferred Trump or DeSantis.
He said that he hadn’t voted once in his life. I found this curious. He seemed to have very defiant opinions about political activity, yet had chosen throughout his long life not to engage in his civic responsibilities.
He said that he had registered about ten years ago, but had never actually voted.
He then volunteered that a few years ago he received a jury summons, but had called to define the “invitation.”
Farming is hard work, and I guess that this man has put in many hours working the soil through the years, yet he has left his civic responsibilities to someone else. He has chosen not to get involved in preserving our nation, our state, or his community, politically.
I suggested that God-fearing, law-abiding defendants were likely disappointed not to have honest, hard-working tax-payers judging their cases.
He then said that a relative of his had served time in jail for some crime they had not committed. I wondered if that was the result of people like him refusing to sit on their jury.
He didn’t seem to understand my point.
I recently wrote an article, loosely based on a very similar scenario, (without an example to cite,) “CHRISTIAN ACTIVISM.” It seems that the Lord has provided a real-life example of the injustice that is possible when good Americans shirk their civic duties.
