Have you ever wondered where the United States of America fits in God’s plan? Is it possible that God was surprised by the Declaration of Independence? Have you ever wondered whether God has considered its place in history. Since God is all-knowing, why is there no obvious prophetic references to the USA in the Bible? Has God ignored our nation’s place in the history of the world?
If you are not a believer in the Bible, you may have no interest in this discussion, but if you are interested in the question, we might find some answers, evidence and explanations, together.
On the other hand, if you are motivated to express your gratitude to God for His great love, and provision, you too may benefit from this intellectual exercise.
As believers, most Christian are quick to acknowledge a firm belief that god is not constrained by time, as we humans are. The Bible proclaims that God’s foreknowledge allows Him to have known the end, from the beginning. The Bible tells us that He knew us before the universe was created, Eph. 1:4
As I see it, that doesn’t leave any possibility that He might not have known that the Pilgrims, (and other travelers to the new world,) would come to this continent, settle it, and rebel against the tyranny of colonial rule. If God’s foreknowledge didn’t cover what would happen, our faith is ill-placed.
If we rely on God’s word as truth, and as we are living in this grand experiment, the USA, we should wonder just how it might fit into His grand plan. Shouldn’t we seek to understand just how our nation, of 245 years, as of July 4, 2021, aligns with God’s will?
As I ponder this matter, I will try to catalog the basic foundation of Christianity;
The first thing I realize is that people are fatally flawed. Rom. 3:23
The next thing I will consider is that God declared that people were then un-redeemable in ourselves. Any salvation could come only by way of His provision, and that Jesus, His, “only begotten son,” was birthed, and empowered to accomplish this feat.
God promised that salvation would come to mankind by way of His promise to Abraham. Whereas this promise was through the nation of Israel, (the descendants of Abraham,) true, spiritual salvation has never been distributed to humans in groups, or nations, but to individuals. Our salvation is effected only by our individual reaction to the promises of God. Even as we can pray for the salvation of others, we can not believe unto anyone else’s salvation. They must believe God’s promise to receive their own salvation.
Throughout the Old Testament we see Israelite kings that chose to honor, and obey God’s commandments, and those that brought condemnation upon themselves by rejecting those commandments.
I realize that for those that are among the born-again Christian believers, these points are elementary, but I suggest that they are also foundational to salvation, or Christianity.
As Christians, we are “individual members” of the body of Christ.
I Co. 12:18-20 But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him. And if they were all one member, where were the body? But now are they many members, yet but one body.
As Americans, we are also individual members, (or citizens,) of our nation. Is this only my opinion, or is this not certified in the specific language of our Constitution?
What is my point? Our relationship to God is specific, it is individual, and our rights, talents, function, and responsibilities within the Church, or the “body of Christ,” are unique to each individual.
Our civic function within the constitutional framework of American citizenship is specific, it is individual, and our rights, talents, function, and responsibilities within citizenship of the United States of America, are also unique.
In this way there are very real similarities between Christianity and American citizenship. Christians have rights, and responsibilities within their membership of the Church of Jesus Christ. Likewise, Americans have rights and responsibilities within their citizenship of the USA.
Just as not all Christians are knowledgeable, or faithful in all requirements of scripture, not all Americans are knowledgeable, or faithful in all requirements of the US Constitution. Just as all promises from the Father are accessible to ALL Christians, and not all Christians fully avail themselves, not all Americans choose to avail themselves of their benefits through our constitution, nor do all live up to their responsibilities.

E. C. Wines wrote in COMMENTARIES ON THE LAWS OF THE ANCIENT HEBREWS, (NY: Geo P. Putnam & Co., 1853);
A fundamental principal of the Hebrew government was… the education of the whole body of the people; especially, in the knowledge of the constitution, laws and history of their own country.
An ignorant people can not be a free people. Intelligence is essential to liberty. No nation is capable of self-government, which is not educated to understand and appreciate its responsibilities…
Maimonides, in his treatise on the study of the law, says: “Every Israelite, whether poor or rich, healthy or sick, old or young, is obliged to study the law,” …He asks, “ How long ought a man to pursue the study of the law?” And replies, “Till death.”

Liberty relies on the freedom of citizens to be educated in their rights and responsibilities, to themselves, their families, and the general public. Without the exercise of this knowledge, wisdom is illusive, whether by choice or deprivation. While US Constitutional republicanism requires a citizenry to be thus educated, Marxism encourages rejection of these immutable truths by ignorance, and deprivation.
Marxism, (which encourages, and is based on atheism,) as a shell game or con, diverts the convert from the recognition of immutable truths, and appeals to the most selfish instincts of human nature. It encourages people to think that it is compassionate to take the possessions from persons that, “have,” and give them to those that, “have not,” regardless of the efforts expended by those that, “have,” to acquire, or the choices that the, “have nots,” may have chosen, causing them not to have.
Marxism seems easy and compassionate, (if we ignore the results.) The cost, and the tyranny of Marxism is more than evident, in that it has never, in the history of the world, ever produced the promised results. Instead, it has repeatedly produced realities such as, poverty, violence, torture, starvation, death and destruction for the many, while providing enormous wealth and worldly liberty for the very few. That’s right, it establishes, and exacerbates the very bondage that it claims to oppose, It relies on the basest instincts of human nature. It inspires people to exalt themselves as more intelligent, and compassionate than others, while having little desire to expend their own effort to facilitate benefits to the less fortunate. Marxist disciples tend to believe that it is the responsibility of “others” to provide for the less fortunate. It is not until efforts to apply marxism are successful that its true nature reveals what true Marxists refer to as, “useful idiots.”
Not only does liberty require knowledge and education, it requires action. Those righteous principals must be acted upon in order to produce prosperity, compassion, and liberty.
Constitutional republicanism, while flawed, is the closest form of government to what God chose for man. That government that existed between God and Israel, before Israel demanded a King from Samual. The flaws exist because mankind is flawed.
In Genesis chapter three we learn that Adam and Eve were given almost boundless opportunities. They were free to partake of anything that they wanted but one thing. That forbidden choice was clearly made known by God, their creator.
The Serpent, (or Satan,) fully knew the truth. He knew that he had been banished to earth, where Adam had been given all authority. That means that Satan fell under Adam’s authority, and had no power over Adam and Eve, unless they gave that power to him.
Here in America, we the people have been expressly given the power to govern ourselves by the founding documents. The US Constitution makes that plain in the first three words, “We the people.” We allow that to be usurped when, and only when we choose to give that authority away. Satan deceived Adam and Eve in order to usurp Adam’s authority over self-government. Adam thus yielded to the tyranny of bondage. Likewise, marxism seeks to deceive Americans, and subjugate their God given authority, delineated in the Constitution.

I invite discussion on these matters. If you believe that I am in error on any point of Biblical principal, or the US Constitution, please comment, and we can discuss it.
I only ask that we keep it factual, and principled. I am not interested in partisan bickering. I come at these subjects from the perspective that The Bible is THE ULTIMATE AUTHORITY. Under that umbrella, the US Constitution, (including the “bill of Rights” and the rest of the amendments,) serves as our governing authority.
Whether these are properly authoritative is a topic of another discussion. Here we will assume these authorities, or we will not engage. Thank you.
God bless you, Dave
