The USA does not seem to appear in scripture at all, so any projection of passages to represent God’s will concerning our nation would be purely speculation, whether for restoration, or for destruction.
God knows the heart of all men, and judges accordingly. His judgements are flawless.
The records in scripture are either prophesies of future events, revelations of Gods judgements, or historical representations of the works of God, and/or the works of men. All of these records reveal His judgements, and His will.
The first mention of Nineveh, that I can find, is in Genesis 10:11. In the verses from 10:8-12, we see that the “beginning of (Nimrod’s kingdom) Babel, and Erech, and Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar. From that land went out Asshur, and built Nineveh.
There is no association at this point of Nineveh as a paragon of virtue. It is not associated with people that love Jehovah, rather with cities, and men of poor reputation.
Jacob is born much later, in Genesis 25:26, and Israel, as a nation does not exist until many years later, so what is the connection between Nineveh and Israel at the time of this record in, “Jonah?”
Are there any prophecies of Nineveh before the occurrences in the book of Jonah?
In Zephaniah 2:12-13 we read that Nineveh will become, “a desolation. A place of drought like the wilderness.” Did this happen before the records in Jonah, or after? Was it not later?
If Nineveh was to eventually become, “a desolation, and a place of drought like the wilderness,” would we agree with Jonah, or God on whether it was worth saving at the time of the book of Jonah?
“So Jonah arose, and went unto Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD . Now Nineveh was an exceeding great city of three days' journey.
And Jonah began to enter into the city a day's journey, and he cried, and said, Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown.
So the people of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them.” Jonah 3:3-5
Where does Nineveh exist today? What did God say about the existence of Nineveh?
Eventually Nineveh became as was foretold in Zephaniah 2:12-13, but it was God’s will that Jonah inform the people of Nineveh of their transgressions against the Lord, and offer them the opportunity for repentance. Remember that Nineveh was not part of the nation of Israel. They were not from within God’s chosen people.
Knowing that this record can not be equated to our situation in the USA, does this record not suggest that it would be God’s will that our nation should be confronted on its depravity, and need for repentance?
Knowing that the responsibility for the spiritual nature of our nation falls upon the sovereign, (which our constitution says is, “we the people,”) are we not responsible to God to devote ourselves, (along with declaring the Gospel, and “making disciples,”) to effect the government of our nation toward submission to the will of God?
After Jonah proclaimed the word of the Lord, and Nineveh repented, Jonah protested to God. He still would have preferred that God would make Nineveh as prophesied in Zephaniah 2:12-13, yet what did God say to Jonah?
“And God said to Jonah, Doest thou well to be angry for the gourd? And he said, I do well to be angry, even unto death.
Then said the LORD , Thou hast had pity on the gourd, for the which thou hast not laboured, neither madest it grow; which came up in a night, and perished in a night:
and should not I spare Nineveh, that great city, wherein are more than sixscore thousand persons that cannot discern between their right hand and their left hand; and also much cattle?” Jonah 4:9-11
I wonder how many Americans cannot tell their right hand from their left, the sons from their daughters, good from evil, peaceful protestors from insurrectionists, victims from criminals, or children’s books from pornography?
I don’t want to ride in the belly of a great fish, do you?
We had no part in the creation of The United States of America. We did not pledge our lives, our fortunes, or our sacred honor. We did not fight on the battlegrounds of oppression against the greatest fighting force on earth. Many of us have never taken up arms in the defense of our fellow Americans, or the nation of our birth.
We inherited this nation from those that did. Until we make efforts to restore, and preserve this nation, we have no, “skin in the game.” We are like trust fund babies, who often pervert the inheritance that they are given.
Are we righteous in our disdain for what the USA has become if we are unwilling to persevere in righteousness till the end, endeavoring to restore the, “one nation, under God, with liberty, and justice for all?”
Just asking.
God bless you, Dave
