I believe that some of our brethren believe that it is below our spiritual calling to be concerned with political matters. They think that to strive for political excellence is to exalt the political, (or worldly aspects,) above the spiritual calling to the worship, reverence, and evangelism aspects of our spiritual walk in Christ.
Admittedly, it is possible to forsake our spiritual duties, in favor of worldly matters, but is it the intention of God that we should forsake natural duties, and focus only upon our duties to reverence, and fear the Lord Almighty?
At face value, it is entirely possible to interpret this section of the Gospel, Matt 6:-250-34, to mean exactly that, but is this what God means?
Does the obedient Christian then not work to earn a living? Does he not buy food for himself and his family? Does he not sit down to meals with his family, and enjoy the food, and fellowship provided by a loving God. Does he not work to provide a home, and clothing for himself, and his family?
All of these issues are directly addressed in the afore mentioned passage. The commandment is very clear that we are not to allow any, or all of these matters to supersede the importance of submission to the Word of God, but does this mean that we have no duty concerning them? If so, why do we transgress this commandment in the pursuit of each, and every one of them, and why then is it “spiritually responsible” for us to neglect political duties?
If we are not responsible in our interpretation of particular passages of scripture, we do not know “THE WORD OF GOD,” or God’s purposes for these passages. Sometimes, our flesh inhibits our understanding of God’s truth. In our effort to submit to the word of God, we fall prey to the methods of Satan, to distract us, and hide the true meaning of God’s word, (see Genesis, chapter 3.)
Just as we have a spiritual duty to be faithful to work, dress ourselves, feed ourselves, provide for the poor, provide these things for our families, and evangelize the lost, we have a spiritual duty to be active in political matters.
God bless you, Dave
